The Australian motorcycle industry has commenced 2026 on a positive trajectory, with the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) reporting a 7.4% increase in sales during the first quarter compared to the same period in 2025.
This growth underscores the resilience and evolving preferences within the market.

Between January and March 2026, a total of 20,624 motorcycles, off-highway vehicles, and scooters were sold across Australia. The off-road segment led this surge, recording a remarkable 26.7% year-on-year increase, amounting to 8,737 units sold. This uptick reflects a growing enthusiasm for recreational and adventure riding among Australians.

Scooter sales also experienced a notable rise, increasing by 7.8% to 1,431 units. This trend suggests a shift towards more economical and efficient urban transportation solutions, likely influenced by rising fuel costs and increasing urban congestion.

Conversely, road motorcycle sales saw a slight decline of 3.2%, while off-highway vehicles experienced a 9.2% decrease compared to the previous year. These mixed results highlight the dynamic nature of consumer preferences within the motorcycle market.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber commented on the results, stating, "The first quarter results show solid growth, primarily due to strong performance in the off-road segment, driven by recreational demand." He also noted that while the current figures do not yet reflect external factors such as global fuel uncertainties, there is an expectation of increased interest in road motorcycles and scooters as alternative forms of urban transport in the near future.

For prospective buyers, this growth indicates a robust market with diverse options across various segments. Whether you're interested in off-road adventures or seeking a cost-effective commuting solution, the current market trends suggest a favorable environment for making a purchase.

As always, it's advisable to explore financing options that suit your financial situation. With a range of lenders offering competitive rates and flexible terms, securing a motorbike loan has become more accessible. Remember to consider factors such as interest rates, loan terms, and any associated fees to ensure you make an informed decision.

In summary, the Australian motorcycle market's performance in the first quarter of 2026 reflects a healthy and adaptable industry, catering to the diverse needs and preferences of riders nationwide.

August's lending market is giving Australian motorcycle buyers a familiar but important message: finance is available, yet the cheapest advertised rate is not always the best guide to what a rider will actually pay. Recent finance comparison updates across the broader vehicle and personal lending market show lenders are still competing for strong borrowers, while pricing remains more selective for applicants with thinner credit files, irregular income or higher existing debts. - read more

Australia’s motorcycle market appears to be moving into a more selective phase after a stronger start to the year, with recent industry commentary pointing to uneven demand across different bike categories. For riders, that does not mean the market has stalled. It does mean buyers may need to be more strategic about timing, finance structure and the total cost of ownership. - read more
